Speech Therapy Clinic Expands Medicaid Coverage
to Better Serve Low-Income Families in Dallas

(DALLAS, August 18, 2015) – Dallas Reading and Language Services is pleased to announce they are now accepting clients enrolled in Texas Bluebonnet Health Plans, and the Children’s Medical Center Health Plans for CHIP, STAR, STAR+PLUS, STAR Health, and Star Kids products.

The speech therapy clinic proudly adds these plans to all other Medicaid insurance carriers which they accept including Molina Healthcare, Parkland Medicaid/CHIP, Amerigroup, and TMHP.

“This addition follows our clinic’s continuing efforts to provide high-quality services to those in need in the Dallas community,” says Rachel Betzen, M.A., CCC/SLP, the clinic’s founding speech-language therapist. “We are very happy that we can now offer even more access to healthcare for the people in Dallas.”

Dallas Reading and Language Services has been a leading provider of speech-language therapy and reading programs in North Texas since their founding by Rachel Betzen in 2005. They are unique among North Texas speech therapy and language service providers for their focus on working with lower socio-economic families, as well as middle class and higher income families.

Today, Dallas Reading and Language Services offers services on a sliding scale basis for private pay families, as well as some insurance, in addition to the Medicaid plans they accept.

Dallas Reading and Language Services also provides free screenings for hearing, speech and language. Parents may e-mail or call to schedule a screening appointment.

Dallas Reading and Language Services is also available to provide hearing or speech-language screenings in the community.

Health clinics, private schools, and community centers are encouraged to contact the clinic at 214.646.1570 for further information on these services.

New Speech Therapy Solution Now Available in North Texas
Innovative system can cut months or years off therapy time

Smart-Palate(DALLAS, August 13, 2015)
– The American Speech and Hearing Association reports that roughly 6-8 million Americans have a language impairment – many of them children. Thanks to a technology now available in North Texas, that number may be shrinking. Dallas Reading and Language Services, a pediatric speech-language pathology clinic in Dallas, has started using a new device called SmartPalate™ with their clients. They are the only speech therapy clinic in North Texas using the device.

The SmartPalate™ is a custom mouthpiece and computer software system that displays where a student’s tongue is touching the roof of his or her mouth during speech. Speech-language pathologists, including the staff at Dallas Reading and Language Services, then create custom “tongue targets” for the sound(s) the student is working to develop such as /r/, /l/ or /s/. The visual target allows the student to repeatedly practice the sound simply by matching his or her their tongue with the respective target.

“SmartPalate™ empowers clients to self-correct speech errors with tongue movements they can feel and see,” says Rachel Betzen, M.A., CCC/SLP, founder of Dallas Reading and Language Services. “Those new to speech therapy can correct speech errors more quickly. Clients who have struggled with persistent speech errors are now finally able to experience success and achieve their speech goals.”

SmartPalate™ technology, known as electropalatography, was developed by Dr. Samuel Fletcher, an industry-recognized audiologist and speech-language pathologist in the mid-1950s. For decades, the use of the technology was limited to research facilities, primarily with speech students who were deaf or hearing impaired. In 2010, CompleteSpeech developed a system for commercial use and speech-language pathologists have continually expanded the use of the technology to students with multiple speech disorders and backgrounds.

In multiple cases, children and teens who have struggled in speech therapy for years without significant progress have made immediate sizable improvements in their speech and consequently their self-esteem and confidence – usually within a matter of months.

July 29, 2015

Dear Parents and Guardians,

mckennaWe have exciting news to report once again! Our clinic continues to grow, and we are pleased to announce that to better serve your child, we have hired McKenna Jackson, M.S., CCC/SLP, as our newest full-time speech therapist.

McKenna earned her Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology in 2012 at the University of Texas at Dallas, which she attended on the Texas Engineering Scholarship. She earned her Master of Science in Communication Disorders there two years later and she is licensed in Texas and certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association as a Speech-Language Pathologist.

McKenna has a passion for helping children. While attending college and before, she was a volunteer with Samaritan Inn, providing homework tutoring and emotional support to children aged 1-13, and for ManeGait, where she helped teach mentally and physically-challenged children to ride horses, thus gaining self-confidence and inner strength.

She has a strong technical and scientific background as well, having worked as the lab coordinator for the Developmental Neurolinguistics Lab at the University of Texas at Dallas for a year and a half.

Before coming to work with us at Dallas Reading and Language Services, McKenna worked in home healthcare and for the Frisco ISD school system, as a speech therapist.

We are very proud to have McKenna join our team, and we feel she will be an asset to both our clinic and to you our client.

Thank you for supporting our special speech therapy practice, and for helping us to change lives for children and families.

Kind Regards,

Rachel Betzen, M.A., CCC/SLP

Put yourself on the first place

Individual treatment is often termed as psychotherapy, and is meant to help people with their emotional issues, which can range in order of their severity or intensity. The main aim of this form of therapy is to change the quality of life by defining the path of life clearly, and bringing in more clarity. Whether it is the problem of repressed childhood that you are facing, or an emotional breakdown due to divorce, failure or loss of a loved one, a professional psychologist can help you revive your mental health through systematic counselling.

10 tips for less stressful mornings

Self-esteem and confidence are major traits in individuals that affect their success. While these are a lifelong process, the foundation of it needs to be established in early childhood. Building self-esteem will allow the child to deal with difficult situations that they will encounter during their lifetime. Since parents have the greatest influence on a child’s belief, it is important for them to let their child know where they belong, how well they are doing and contribute towards developing confidence and self-esteem.

Spend more time with your children and improve their confidence

In today’s competitive world, sleep is more of a luxury than a necessity. Sleep is important for the well being, both emotionally and physically for an individual. Insufficient sleep or no sleep has long lasting health and psychological disorders. If you have been experiencing insomnia, it may be due to a number of factors, including stress, anxiety or depression. In order to address your sleep problem, it is best to consult an experienced psychologist who can help you change your behaviour, manage feelings and emotions that may interfere with your sleep.

How to improve your memory?

It has been believed for centuries that as we grow older, our brain functions continue to deteriorate, which also impacts and weakens our memory. However, recent medical researches and experiments have proved that our brain has the ability to grow new neurons, even as we age, a process known scientifically as neuroplasticity. The mental health of a person depends vastly on how active the person is – physically and mentally. If you keep forgetting things too quickly, or have noticed a sharp decline in your mental health in terms of memory recently, it is time to make some really important changes in your lifestyle to help sharpen and improve your memory.
