How much does therapy cost?

For private pay families, the cost for an initial evaluation and follow up consultation with a written report is $350. The cost of therapy is done on a sliding scale basis for all families who pay out-of pocket. Families are encouraged to use our sliding scale, which takes into account a family’s income, number of dependent children, out-of pocket medical expenses and a few other factors.

Our sessions are 30-60 minutes each and include consultation, home practice, monthly reports, and communication and phone consultations with schools, teachers and primary care physicians (if desired) to ensure the best outcome for each child. The base cost of a one hour session is $150 per session. The base cost of a 30 minute session is $90.

Do you accept credit cards for payment?

Yes we do! Dallas Reading and Language Services happily accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, Diner’s Club, and Pay Pal.

Are reading services covered by insurance?

No, our reading programs are for clients who do not have an underlying language disorder or delay. Reading and language difficulty is often a sign of an underlying language processing disorder/delay. We advise all clients to have us conduct a full evaluation.

If there is a speech or language disorder/delay underlying the reading problem, insurance will pay for speech therapy to address that disorder/delay. Since we conduct speech therapy in the context of whole language literacy, clients will often notice significant reading and comprehension improvements during the course of therapy.

We do have clients who come to us who do not qualify as having a disorder/delay. For those clients we do offer reading programs at our standard rates to address the reading concern. For more information on costs of services, click here.

How long are therapy sessions?

Students typically receive therapy once or twice weekly in a 30-60 minute session.

What about privacy?

We take your child’s privacy very seriously. Dallas Reading and Language Services is required by a federal law known as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA; Pub.L. 104–191, 110 Stat. 1936, enacted August 21, 1996) to keep all health information confidential. What can my child expect in therapy?

Many children and their parents have reservations or apprehensions about therapy, wondering what it will be like, and what to expect in the session. At Dallas Reading and Language Services, in our initial session with the child, we want to determine right where the child is in terms of his or her speech, language, and reading development. We do this by means of an evaluation session. In this session, the therapist uses standardized tests and interacts with the child, and then produces a written report for the parent and child with recommended goals for therapy.

The therapist then meets with the parent for a consultation, in which the results of the evaluation are interpreted and explained. If a child is determined to need speech-language or reading therapy, then he or she will need lots of cues and feedback from both the therapist and his or her parents during the treatment period. Positive reinforcement and a relaxed learning environment are very important factors in the child’s success in therapy, and we have created a home-like environment at our clinic for that very purpose.

As the therapy progresses, the therapist will add new goals and adjust existing goals as needed. We very much want to see the child develop his or her new skills, so we encourage parents to help their children work on their therapy goals at home, and we encourage teachers to help children practice their new skills in the classroom.

Am I allowed to observe my child’s sessions?

Absolutely! Parents are welcome to observe sessions and to ask questions.

How is an evaluation done?

Speech therapy and reading testing usually takes about one to one and a half hours. One of our speech therapists will schedule a time for parents to come for a follow-up consultation where they will receive the test report and discuss findings. This is also a time to discuss the student’s goals for therapy and what students and their families can expect regarding our services.Private pay families in the Dallas, Texas area – please note that this consultation is included in the costs of service.
